The historical town centre is protected by a wall and overlooks a square, where once there was a harbour, now buried. The Palazzo dei Capitani, built in the Gothic-Venetian style of the 15th century, dominates the square. The most interesting constructions include Palazzo Fregoso, belonging to a powerful family of Genoa origin, and Palazzo Parlotti, an open gallery designed by the architect Michele Sanmicheli.
